WIC Nutrition Buzz: High Blood Pressure

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month! Did you know that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke?
Being 43 and just having a son, it’s very important to me, that I keep my heart healthy so that I’ll always be able to keep up with him. Here are some tips to help you prevent high blood pressure:
- Adults should eat no more than 2300 mg of sodium per day. Many people need to be even more careful and eat no more than 1500 mg of sodium per day.
- Your salt shaker is not the main problem. In fact, only a small amount of the sodium we eat comes from salt added while cooking or eating.
- Most of the sodium we eat (almost 80%) is in foods that are pre-packaged, processed, or prepared and meals at restaurants. Choose low-sodium versions of bread, canned vegetables, soups and beans.
- Rinsing canned vegetables and beans removes almost half of the sodium!
