Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas called in to Karson & Kennedy to talk about the band’s first new album in 10 years, North. Plus, Salt just had to ask him to be what Katy Perry already refused to be: honorary godfather to his soon-to-be-born nephew Spencer.
After a decade-long hiatus for Matchbox Twenty that included a “greatest hits” compilation and two solo albums, Thomas said there were questions over whether they were even going to make it. But the time just felt right for the guys to get back together and record their long-awaited fourth studio album, and for the first time in a while it felt like everyone in the band devoted themselves to making it.
“We realized that to make this record, we have to be ready to put out the kind of effort that we’d have to put out to make the kind of record we really wanted to make,” said Thomas, “and now this was a time where everyone was committed to doing that.”
The interview segued into Salt interjecting with his own personal question for Thomas, as his quest to find an honorary godparent for his unborn nephew continues after Katy Perry shot him down. He asked Thomas if he would be honorary godfather to the nephew of his sister, who he claims is a huge Matchbox Twenty fan.
Rob didn’t quite say “Yes,” but he didn’t exactly say “No,” either. He sounded willing to be an honorary anything if there were no other responsibilities attached to the title.
“I’ll be an honorary wizard, I don’t care!” he cracked as the gang laughed.
