Earlier this morning, Karson, Kennedy and Salt interviewed the Canadian sensation that’s taking the U.S. by storm, the one and only Carly Rae Jepsen.
Having released a few singles before in her native Canada, the 26-year-old “Call Me Maybe” singer admits that this newfound fame and appeal here in the states is unlike anything she’s experienced before.
“That was never our intention [for “Call Me Maybe” to be this big]. It was written by myself and two of my friends, and we wrote it like we write any song together, just sort of for the fun of writing without any intention of it going anywhere. But it’s really rad that it did.”
After reading off a litany of covers, including the one by former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Salt wanted to know what her favorite lip-dub of the song was.
She responded, “A few of them have been pretty mind-blowing to witness. When Katy Perry did hers that was insane. I’m a big fan of Katy’s, so that was really cool.”
Jepsen then discussed the YouTube video that catapulted “Call Me Maybe” to new heights, the one featuring Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale, and how grateful she was for it. She flew out to Los Angeles shortly after it went viral and signed a deal with Scooter Braun and the Biebs, the 18-year-old’s first ever signing.
Karson and Salt joked that it must be weird having someone 8 years your younger sign you to a deal.
Kennedy believes that it will be a “Pay It Forward” type of situation. You know, since it was Usher who found Bieber, and Bieber who found Carly. Now it’s Carly’s turn to find the next big thing!
