We’re counting down all the MixFests dating back to its inception in 1993 in preparation for next month’s show at the DCR Hatch Shell, so enjoy this history lesson as we relive MixFest 1998!

MixFest ’98 was a two-day event held on Columbus Day weekend from Saturday, October 10 – Sunday, October 11. Like all the ones before and most of the ones since, MixFest ’98 was a free concert that took place at Boston’s City Hall Plaza. For those in attendance, voluntary donations were encouraged to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Suffolk County, a non-profit organization that aids child abuse victims.

Despite the rainfall that plagued the city of Boston that weekend, an estimated 150,000 people attended MixFest 1998 over the course of the two-days. The artists for that year included Elvis Costello, Bruce Hornsby, Barenaked Ladies, Hootie & The Blowfish, Edwin McCain and Sister Hazel.

Sunday featured a lot of the big names like Edwin McCain, BNL and Hootie. People camped out early in the wee hours of Sunday morning to get the best view they could, even though heavy rain poured down on them. It would clear up eventually, as some 85,000 people descended upon City Hall Plaza — which was way more than anyone expected!

MixFest took on a different look after the ’98 show. With the enormous amount of people that showed up for MixFest 1998, the city of Boston could barely accommodate a concert of that magnitude anymore. So the next year MixFest was split into two separate shows: one in City Hall Plaza, the other at Foxboro Stadium.
