Sheryl Crow may be speaking out about former fiancé Lance Armstrong, but she’s not saying much.
In a much hyped about interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sheryl remarked on Armstrong’s choice to come clean about using enhancement drugs saying: ”I think that honesty is always the best bet and that the truth will set you free.”
The singer, who said she had only seen “bits and pieces” of Armstrong’s confession with Oprah, continued by saying: ”To carry around a weight like that would be devastating in the long run.”
In the exclusive interview, which took place on the set of The Voice where Sheryl is helping out Blake Shelton on the upcoming season, she chose not to talk about whether or not she knew if Armstrong was doping but remarked, “It must be really hard to walk around knowing you aren’t telling the truth about something. I always contend the truth is the best way to go.”
In a recent interview with Oprah, Lance Armstrong admitted that over the course of his career he had blood transfusions and used the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO). During the sit down, Armstrong admitted that his ex-wife Kristin knew about his doping, but did not mention Sheryl, who he began dating in 2003 and was engaged to in 2005.
Though the two broke off their engagement a year later, Sheryl was with the athlete for two of his seven Tour de France wins.
News came out yesterday that the singer was also named twice in affidavits, or sworn statements, used in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s case against Armstrong.
In one of the court documents, Armstrong’s former teammate Frankie Andreu claims he and his wife, Betsy, were called to Armstrong’s hotel room to retract previous statements where they said the cyclist admitted to doping.
Andreu stated, “His girlfriend at the time, Sheryl Crow, was in the room and I felt uncomfortable talking about this in front of her so I did not say much.”
Andreu’s wife also claimed in an affidavit that her husband chose not say much because he “did not want to discuss this in front of her.”
