Teen pop megastar Justin Bieber has had his fair share of critics for his behavior recently, and some of it has been justified. But where does this latest attack from Jon Bon Jovi lie?
The 51-year-old rock star absolutely demolished Bieber in a recent interview after he was asked about Bieber’s recent flakiness at concerts, showing up and starting late on multiple occasions. The latest was in London at the O2 arena, where Bieber started two hours late.
“Every generation has guys that do that, none of that is new,” he told the London Evening Standard.
He continued: “They run the risk of disrespecting their audience members who have worked hard to pay for their ticket, to give you the permission to take two or three hours of their lives — or in that kid’s case, 80 minutes of their lives…Do it once, you can be forgiven. Do it enough times and shame on you. They won’t have you back. Then it just becomes a cliché.”
And then, the bomb: “It’s really not cool — you’re an a**hole. Go to f***in’ work!”
As vulgar as it was, Bon Jovi does have the right to say such things. He’s earned a reputation as one of the hardest working men in music and his band has defied critics for decades by staying in the mainstream and continuing to headline massive sold-out shows worldwide.
Bieber isn’t likely to listen to Bon Jovi’s barbs, given his defiance in the face of harsh criticism lately. But perhaps he should.
Bon Jovi knows what it’s like to have to win over whole new generations of fans, and Bieber will likely have to do the same. Pretty soon, his current generation of fans is going to outgrow his music and he may need to reinvent himself to stay relevant. And showing up late to concerts isn’t going to earn him any new fans.
