TBT: 2001, When We Were “Fallin'” For Alicia Keys

by Alisha Jackson

During this week in 2001, we first started fallin’ in and out of love with Alicia Keys‘ debut single. The love affair lasted for a solid three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, until Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule caught our eye with “I’m Real.” We inevitably fell back in love with Alicia, who ruled the charts again for another three weeks. However, “I’m Real” took over once more, and stayed at number one for the remainder of October.

Can you believe it’s been 15 years since Alicia Keys first hit the music scene?! Let’s take a trip back in time, and learn some throwback tidbits about the track!

“I wanted to write a song for someone who was 10 or 12 years old — like a young Michael Jackson,” she told Billboard. Even though he was young, he was singing some deep stuff back then. [“Fallin'”] is about the ins and outs of a relationship. Sometimes, you’re completely head-over-heels in love with someone, and sometimes you can’t stand that person. You fall in and out, sometimes it goes back and forth, and that’s just what relationships are about.”

3. The music video continues into Keys’ next single, “A Woman’s Worth.”

The music video for “Fallin'” follows Alicia Keys to a prison to visit her boyfriend. “A Woman’s Worth” explores what happens when Keys’ boyfriend is released.
