Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins renamed their prior group This Beautiful Mess in 2002 to Republic alongside Drew Brown. Eddie Fisher joined the band in 2005 after drummer Jerrod Bettis left the group, while Brent Kutzle was the last to join in 2009.

2. Zach guest starred as a park ranger on an episode of Criminal Minds

According to fan site 1R United, he played a “forest ranger looking for answers.” Many killings had gone down at the park he watches over.

3. The first award the band won was at the MTV Asia Awards for “Best HookUup” in 2008

By collabing with Timbaland on “Apologize,” the group beat out Rihanna feat. Jay-Z — “Umbrella,” Avril Lavigne feat. Lil’ Mama — “Girlfriend,” and Beyoncé & Shakira — “Beautiful Liar!”

4. Brent Kutzle appeared in the 2008 movie The Eye

The movie stars Jessica Alba, Alessandro Nivola and Parker Posey and focuses on a woman named Sydney Wells (Alba) who receives a double eye transplant that allows her to see into the supernatural world. Brent appears in the opening as a cello player — Alba’s character is a concert violinist.

5. Spencer Pratt claims he was the reason “Apologize” became a massive hit

In an interview with Spin Magazine, Pratt stated, “I took a song that he [Tedder] had and gave it to the music supervisor for The Hills. I said, ‘You need to put this on the episode and make that song the biggest song in the world’…What was the song? It was “Apologize.”

6. Zach Filkins was once a model

According to AXS, Zach Filkins led a past life as model before his music career took off. Apparently, his torso was featured in ads for Covington and Jockey Underwear!

7. Ryan Tedder wrote the song “Halo” for Beyonce

Aside from his success with One Republic, Ryan Tedder has written songs for many artists, including Adele, Jennifer Lopez, and Kelly Clarkson. But, you’d be surprised to learn he wrote “Halo” for Beyonce!

8. The song “Feel Again” features the heartbeats of Guatemalan children

According to Mashable, “the video features recorded heartbeats of healthy children in Malawi and Guatemala as part of a social good initiative benefiting Save the Children and Ad Council’s ‘Every Beat Matters’ campaign.”

This shouldn’t be too surprising seeing as the band came about during the height of the OG social media platform. In an interview with The Virginian Pilot, Filkins stated, “Myspace gave us our last chance. I don’t think any of us really had it in us to keep trying over and over again. Myspace was really the last-ditch effort to make something of it. And right when we were at our lowest, Myspace reacting was the only positive thing within the context of OneRepublic.”

10. Ryan Tedder Has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Advertising

Aside from being gifted with musical talents, Ryan Tedder also has a college degree! After high school, he attended Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma where he earned a BA in Public Relations and Advertising — those skills could definitely cross over into his music career.
