After Beyoncé released her newest album Lemonade, the speculation surrounding one phrase in particular, “Becky with the good hair,” ran rampant. If the allegations Bey implied on the album were true, and Jay Z had been having an affair, then who was the Becky in question?
The BeyHive almost immediately settled on Rachel Roy, Damon Dash’s ex-wife, who would’ve had plenty of exposure to Jay during his time at Roc-A-Fella Records. Plus, there was no denying her great hair. At the time, Roy either had the worst timing in the world or was being cheeky when she posted a photo on Instagram about her hair just as Lemonade was debuting on HBO. Bey’s fans went absolutely nuts, trolling her and forcing her to make her account private. Roy later released a statement denying she was Becky.
Now, Dash is speaking out, criticizing the couple for failing to come to her defense.
Speaking with Grazia Magazine for its new print issue, Dash said, “They are cowards. They should have stepped up and said something. Adults can go and harass a kid on behalf of an R&B singer? The trolls should’ve been put in jail for that, it was crazy. I was disappointed Beyoncé and Jay didn’t say anything” (via Uproxx).
In charging Bey and Jay, he didn’t exactly clear Roy’s name, though. “I don’t care what Rachel did—I don’t agree with a lot things she does,” he added. “I have kids by that woman, so if I ever disrespect their mom it will hurt my kids. I cannot air it out the way I would like to. I love my children, but there are definitely things that are being done which I would not expect of a regular human. But I am a gentleman, so I will not be hard on her.”
In the meantime, Dash is developing a new television series that will focus on Roc-A-Fella Records’ rise and fall.
