Erin Makes Sense of Ingrid Michaelson’s New Album Title Backstage at Mixfest

by Alisha Jackson

Before hitting the stage at Mixfest, Ingrid Michaelson took over the Jumbotron with Erin to talk about her new album, which features the hit single, “Hell No.”

The title of Ingrid’s new album, It Doesn’t Make Sense, actually makes a whole lot of it! “I went through a lot of tumultuous personal events in my life over the past couple of years and I realized when I stopped trying to make sense of my life, everything was so much better and so much easier,” Ingrid explained in reference to her album title. “It was kind of a mantra of mind over the last couple years — ‘it doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to make sense’ — and so I thought, why not name my record that?” “I control and hold onto things, so it’s like, just let it go. Don’t try to define it,” she added.

Ingrid admits that her deeper songs can come from sadness, but her really fun, uplifting songs come from joy. “Sadness gives way to the really kind of deep, great pieces,” she said, “but also there’s a couple of songs on my record that are just really joyful and celebratory.”
