Gavin DeGraw stopped by the Mix Lounge this past Saturday for a special performance just for Mix listners!
Gregg Daniels caught up with the “I Don’t Want To Be” singer backstage where they talked about his new single “She Sets The City On Fire,” joking about moving in together, and also his first memories of famous Boston concert venues.
At the Esplanade, his first memory was watching Little Richard while he was in college. For the Paradise Rock Club, he was playing the small front room while Vince Gill played the large room and he watched his fans leave while he was performing. At the Blue Hills Bank Pavillon — formerly Harbor Lights Paillion — an ex girlfriend invited him to see Huey Lewis and the News there.

When he opened for Shania Twain at the TD Garden not long ago, he performed a surprise duet on stage wit her — “Party For Two” which she originally did with Bill Currington. “She had these great teleprompters for me which was a big help. I felt like I was giving a dissertation on CSPAN! I was staring at this thing.” When he was a student at Berklee, he lived right by Fenway Park, but never had the money to get in. Years later, he got to open for Billy Joel and he was shuttled onto the field and he thought “this was how I was supposed to see Fenway Park. What a day!”
When they talked about his new single “She Sets The City On Fire” Gavin talked about how the song is about dating up. “I’m a 3, but there’s 10s out there!” Gregg asked who the song was about and he revealed “it’s always about a specific girl” — the specific identity was not disclosed.
DeGraw left everybody with some solid dating advice. “Enjoy it while you can…there are people out of your league and that’s okay!”
