When Fox announced that it would be doing Grease live, many people worried that the television event would ruin their beloved musical. Now I’m starting to understand how they felt, because NBC just picked my favorite musical of all time for their 2017 live event, Bye Bye Birdie.
Thankfully, my worries were slightly eased after I heard who they cast as Rosie Alvarez. Not only can Jennifer Lopez pull off sexy and smart, but can you imagine a better dancer for the “Shriner’s Ballet” solo?
Actress Janet Leigh’s performance from the 1963 film is hard to find online, but you can get a taste for the solo by watching Vanessa Williams’ spin on it from the 1995 remake below.
According to E!, Lopez will also serve as executive producer of the live event, which is set to happen next December. “Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favorites,” Lopez said in a statement. “I’m proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals.”
