Mike Mullaney, Mix 104.1 Music Director
Today (November 17th) at 4:40pm, Mix 104.1 debuts the long awaited new single from John Mayer, “Love On The Weekend”. The superstar is readying a new album, due early in 2017.
It’s his first new music since 2013. It’s been a bit a cold spell for Mayer since his last big hit “Waiting for The World To Change” in 2009. Both 2013’s “Paradise Valley and “Born & Raised” in 2012 had been much more rooted in folk rock and country leaning Americana, and neither of the album met with much success (Paradise Valley was his only album that didn’t reach at least GOLD status, 500,000 sold).
That cold spell is a new thing for an artist who has sold 15,000,000 albums since his debut album in 2001. But Mayer recently admitted that he didn’t write ANY music from April of 2016 till he wrote “Love On The Weekend” this past September. He needed, and took, an extended break from songwriting.
This time out, Mayer returns to the team that helped him create his most critically acclaimed albums, the double platinum 2006 collection “Continuum”, musicians Pino Paladino and Steve Jordan. John feels he’s playing better guitar than ever, after having spent the better part of the last year touring with The Grateful Dead. A great example of Mayer’s stellar guitar work was posted last week to his INSTAGRAM account:
As for what Mayer did over the past year, he shrugged and said, “I sometimes just open Uber and watch the cars move around. It relaxes me”.
